Why we're a decision company
By Sean Bucher, founder and CEO of The Block
We've always described The Block by what we make. Websites, business tools, data pipelines, and now Runway and the agents behind it. All of that is true. It just isn't why people work with us.
At our core, we're a decision company. We help people running a business do three things:
- Understand what decisions need to be made.
- Make good decisions quickly.
- See to it that those decisions get done.
Everything we build serves one of those three.
Knowing what needs deciding
Most of the decisions in a business don't show up labelled as decisions. They're in a customer's email at 9 PM, a note at the end of a call, a ticket, a review, a question buried three replies down a thread.
Before you can decide anything, someone has to find it, read the history and work out what's actually being asked. That's a lot of the day for most owners and managers.
Runway does that part. It reads your inbox, calls, tickets, site and accounts and works out which decisions need you. They land on one page as short questions.
Deciding well, and fast
A good decision needs the facts in front of you and a clear option to say yes to.
So every question on Runway comes with a recommended answer and the facts that matter, with a link to where it came from. You say yes, change a line or add a note. If none of the options fit, you write your own.
You're still the one deciding. Runway just does the homework first, and every answer teaches it a little more about how your business decides.
I run The Block on Runway every day. Since September 22 I've answered more than 1,300 decisions on it.
Seeing it done
A decision that doesn't get carried out is just a good idea.
After your yes, agents and our people do the work, and you see the result. The reply goes out from your own inbox. The site change gets checked before it goes live. The finished work lands on one list.
Nothing is sent or spent without your yes. Runway has sent more than 300 emails for me, and I approved each one first.
A real example
At 12:23 AM on October 16 I answered a card about our application to the WTIA Founder Cohort. I asked for a note about our LLC, a sharper focus on businesses with 50 or more employees, and a pitch deck.
The updated answers and a 12 slide deck were back on my runway that night, waiting for my yes. Nothing was submitted without me.
That's the whole idea in one night. The decision was clear, I made it in one answer, and the work behind it got done.
Why this matters for your business
Better AI models will keep coming, and we swap them in as they do. What doesn't change is the job: know what to decide, decide it and see it done.
That's what we sell. Runway is how we do it, and our people stand behind the work.
If you want to see what a morning of decisions looks like, line up a morning on Runway. And if you'd rather talk it through, let me know.
